POPE FFA FLORICULTURE TEAM TAKES FIRST PLACE AT REGION CONTEST!! The Pope Senior FFA Floriculture Team is setting new records this week. On February 29, our team took FIRST PLACE among 25 competing schools in this contest of knowledge and plants. We also, had the TOP INDIVIDUAL score out of 110 kids competing. Way to go Stephanie!!! Photos will be posted soon! State FFA President Speaks at Pope FFA! Feb. 5, 2008 Pope FFA recently welcomed a visit from the State FFA President, Junior Chapman! Members of the Pope Chapter were treated to a super presentation from Chapman who spoke on all the great opportunites for youth in FFA. As a relatively new FFA Chapter, the Pope members left with a renewed interest in developing our chapter to be one of the best! Thank you to Junior Chapman! WELCOME TO POPE HORTICULTURE! Feel free to surf this student information page.... but be sure to check out the other tabs on our site to learn cool things about plants and Pope Horticulture. Our plants rock. Welcome back kids! Spring semester 2008 is now underway, and there are lots of exciting things happening at Pope Horticulture. For starters, our FFA Nursery Landscape Team AND our FFA Floral Design team will advance to the State FFA Finals in March! Way to go guys! Hoorah! We were recently awarded a Cobb Impact Grant, which will fund all of the supplies and materials needed to build a series of decks and outdoor learning areas on the Pope campus. Some of the funds will go to further enhance the Japanese Zen Garden which was build by the Landscape Design students last spring. We are now gearing up for spring 2008 as classes are again at full capacity. Our Spring Plant Sales will begin the last week of March. Other topics integrated into this year's curriculum will be planting with water conservation in mind, xeriscaping, and conservative sustainable organic gardening techniques. All students should soon be planning out their own personal S.A.E. projects. Contact Mr. Green if you need guidance or assistance on choosing your project! Mr. Green has recently returned from traveling to the Galapagos Islands for an International Teacher Program sponsored by Toyota. The daily travel log is now posted! 1. Log In to a computer. Each person should have their own computer. 2. In the Pope Applications menu, open up the program titled HORTICOPIA A TO Z. 3. Horticopia is a huge plant encyclopedia program with 28,000 plants listed! 4. Next, refer to the handout titled HORTICOPIA PLANT SEARCH. From hear, you will research each plant listed and write down your findings in the blanks. 5. TIP!! Notice on the Horticopia home page you will see a little box that says "Common Name, Latin Name". If you will RIGHT CLICK on this box, you can change the search feature to COMMON NAME or BOTANICAL NAME. Choose COMMON NAME. 6. Finally, after you have completed all the research, select FIVE plants to copy and paste photos onto a clipboard. From here you can now print out a page with those five small photos. Glue the small photos to the back of this work sheet and you ARE DONE! 7. WHEN YOU ARE DONE, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR SCORE CARD SIGNED FOR 100 BOOGIE BUCKS! WAY TO GO! |
